While similar in their anatomy, these ungulates are genetically unrelated but have adapted to their unique lifestyles. The spongy, honeycomb core of bighorn sheep horns allows them to head-butt at high speeds while still protecting their brain. They also aid in regulating body temperature, and are “true horns” which never shed. The pronghorn horns are a keratin sheath that grows over a bony core, which is shed and regrown annually. Similarly, whitetail deer antlers also shed and regrow annually, but are made entirely of bone. They grow rapidly and become covered by blood-rich skin and tissue called velvet.
This is a professional giclee reproduction print of the original watercolor painting, and it is archival quality on cotton paper. Each print is signed by the artist in the bottom right corner. The print is not framed, but framing is recommended. All prints are shipped with a mat board backing and in a rigid carboard mailer.
